BEER-O-NOMICS PT.7: CHOICE OF BEER, ENVIRONMENT & SHIPPING

In last week’s Beer-O-Nomics, we talked about Building an Economy and Guam’s Market. Here’s the next section on Choice of Beer, Environment, and shipping. If you missed the previous sections, Check it out. DOES THAT MEAN THAT WE WOULD NO LONGER HAVE A CHOICE OF BEER? Exactly the opposite, there would be more and better choices! Our beer would be super fresh because it doesn’t have to go through months in transit and storage. It would be healthier because it would no longer need massive amounts of preservatives. It would be tastier because with all the added competition, local brew masters would be able to make their beer to meet all of our various tastes and markets. HOW WOULD THIS BE GOOD FOR THE ENVIROMENT? In two ways: First it would drastically reduce greenhouse emissions as a result of eliminating the smog created by the trucks and ships needed to ship our beer thousands of miles from the brewery. This in turn would be us doing our part to reduce global warming which is a serious threat to those of us that live on an island. Second, by bottling on Guam it would be more cost effective for bottlers to reuse beer bottles, like they did when we were kids. There would be less trash in our public places and in our land fill. WON’T THERE STILL NEED TO BE STUFF SHIPPED IN? Of course. I doubt Guam’s farmers could produce all of the hops and barley needed to fulfill our needs (but I bet they could grow some of the needed supplies) and even with the reuse of bottles, the initial batch would have to be shipped in and bottles do break from time to time. On top of that, tourists from Asia as well as the States will inevitably ship and take Guam beer home as a souvenir or those of us that have family living overseas will probably ship some to them as a reminder of home. Read the last section on how to make this happen and creating thousands of jobs next week!
